Breast ultrasound is an essential diagnostic examination for evaluating breast pain, lumps, cysts and other breast abnormalities. It is particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue and serves as an excellent complementary investigation when clinically indicated.
A blood test tells you how your thyroid is functioning. An ultrasound shows what it looks like. Together they explain enlargement, nodules and cysts and guide what happens next. The same technique covers other superficial structures in the neck and elsewhere.
Ultrasound examines soft tissue structures that an X-ray cannot show, including tendons, muscles, joint effusions and superficial lumps. Because the scan is live, the radiologist can assess the structure while the joint is moved, which frequently reveals what a static image would miss.

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology uses a very thin needle to draw cells from a suspicious lump, most commonly in the thyroid, breast or a lymph node. When the lump is deep or hard to feel, ultrasound guidance places the needle precisely, so the sample comes from the right part of the lesion rather than the tissue beside it.
The procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes, is done on an outpatient basis and helps you avoid a more invasive surgical biopsy.
Real-time ultrasound lets the radiologist watch the needle as it moves, which improves sample adequacy and reduces the chance of an inconclusive result requiring a repeat visit.
The collected cells are placed on a glass slide, stained and examined under a microscope by a specialist pathologist, so the result comes back from someone trained to read exactly this kind of sample.
Fatty liver disease develops quietly and rarely causes symptoms until it is advanced. Ultrasound is the standard first-line test because it shows the increased echogenicity of a fatty liver directly, and it does so without radiation or any preparation beyond fasting.

Dr. Syed Jaffer Sadique is a Specialist Radiologist trained in diagnostic radiology and imaging science, with experience across ultrasound, X-ray, CT and MRI. He completed his MD in Radiodiagnosis at NITTE University, Mangalore and subsequently served as Assistant Professor at PK Das Institute of Medical Sciences, Palakkad, where he taught undergraduate students in radiology. He holds mini fellowships in knee and shoulder MRI and in spine, cord and sacroiliac joint MRI, and performs basic interventional procedures including ultrasound-guided biopsy and FNAC. At Wellkins he personally performs and reports ultrasound examinations, so the person interpreting your scan is the same person who acquired it.
